3. : a line along which an aircraft is known (as by ground reference or celestial fix) to be flying and which when crossed with another line of position will establish the precise position of the aircraft

the charted course on which an aircraft or ship is traveling, as determined by visual sightings, as of a railroad, or by radio or celestial means. When an intersecting line is obtained, the exact position of the craft can be determined.
